This project is one of a series produced by students in UNL's College of Journalism and Mass Communications, a program committed to developing the cross-cultural communication professionals of the future. National and international projects such as this allow students to explore topics of global impact in depth and to develop work that goes beyond the for superficial broad distribution.

News Magazine: "Renovating the Republic"
Germany and America have shared a unique relationship throughout history, has have Germany and Nebraska. For the past year, a group of UNL journalism students has closely examined this foreign country that, perhaps more than any other, helped shape the Cornhusker State.

To a large extent, what they found was a tale of two 9/11's. When the U.S. was attacked, Germany, not usually inclined to rely on military power to solve international crises, supported U.S. moves in Afghanistan. But they declined to support the invasion of Iraq, straining relations with the U.S.

But there was an earlier 9/11 for Germany. On Nov. 9, 1989 - which becomes 9.11.1989 when written European-style - Germans began tearing down the Berlin Wall. When the Soviet Union disappeared, Germany, split into East and West for 40 years, was reunited. These two events color nearly everything happening in Germany today. And they cast light on the complicated and complex relationship between Germany and the United States that has bound the nations together for centuries.

Documentary Film: "Breaking Down Barriers"
A documentary on immigration and education "Breaking Down Barriers" examines the challenges faced by Hispanic immigrants in Nebraska and Turkish immigrants in Germany. The documentary also looks at perceptions immigrants and native born immigrants hold as well as solutions being experimented with that could offer immigrants better educational opportunities
