Two UNL students named to UWIRE 100

Katie Steiner and Brittany Jones-Cooper were named as two of the 100 best student journalists in the country, according to CNN. UWIRE, a membership organization for student media, was launched this year to recognize up-and-coming journalists in a changing media environment. Steiner is a senior reporter at The Daily Nebraskan . Jones-Cooper is a Nike Field Reporter for NikeWomen.com.

Judges sifted through more than 500 nominations of student journalists from more than 130 universities around the country. Students were chosen based on their dedication to journalism, the quality of their work, the depth of their experience and the strength of their references.

"UWIRE's mission is to discover and promote young talent," said Ben French, general manager of UWIRE. "The UWIRE 100 will hopefully give the world a first look at the future of media and its leaders. Looking at this list, I think there's a lot of reason for optimism."

Steiner is a junior news-editorial major and will graduate in 2010. Jones-Cooper is a senior broadcasting major and is expected to graduate in 2008. Both are from Omaha, Neb.
