Student Impact Awards

A College of Journalism and Mass Communications student organization and faculty member received two of the five Spirit of Service Awards at a formal banquet April 21.

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln Public Relations Student Society of America won the 2011 Student Organization Award for the "Cotton: From Blue to Green" campaign that ran in October 2010.

UNL PRSSA was commended for developing partnerships across city and east campus as well as with many community organizations and businesses. They set out to gather 500 pairs of jeans to be recycled into insulation for low-income housing, but exceeded their goal by 800 percent. UNL PRSSA was chosen by Cotton, Inc. as one of five universities to help with the 2010 denim drive.

Advertising and public relations professor Phyllis Larsen received the 2011 Faculty Award for her service as PRSSA adviser, leader of the alternative spring break trip to Pine Ridge and her work on the board of directors for four different nonprofit organizations.

Service-Learning seeks to recognize the efforts of students, student organizations, faculty, staff and community partners in the areas of Service-Learning and volunteerism. The Spirit of Service Awards are a part of the Student Impact Awards. The three other awards are the Student Award, the Kim A. Hobson Award given to a UNL staff member, and the Community Partner Award.
