Documentary to be shown for first time at CoJMC

"A Nation Held Hostage," a documentary by Salim Amin, will be shown for the first time at the College of Journalism and Mass Communications Wednesday, April 15, at 7 p.m. Amin is the keynote speaker at the second biannual Blacks in Film Festival April 16-20 on the UNL campus (see calendar for more information).

This 25-minute documentary tells the extraordinary story of appalling and unrelenting abuse allegedly committed in Eritrea since this nation gained its independence from Ethiopia in 1993.

The film includes interviews with Eritreans who risked their lives to escape across the country's borders to Ethiopia and Sudan. Every facet of society has reportedly faced persecution for speaking out against a one-party state with no functioning parliament.

The documentary was made in collaboration with Camerapix in Nairobi, Kenya, and the Stromme Foundation, Kristiansand, Norway. Camerapix provides exclusive images of and stories about Africa (www.camerapix.com).
