LINCOLN - Sarah Pavan, the most decorated female athlete in Nebraska history, has endured four years of painful relationships with envious teammates, a tense relationship with her volleyball coach and has spent more time crying than laughing in her storied Husker career. She told this story to student journalist Katelyn Kerkhove in the February issue of redwire, a student magazine published by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's College of Journalism and Mass Communications. The issue hits the stands at UNL Monday, Feb. 18.
Pavan is one of nine profiles in the issue, which includes the story of Tom Brewer, who survived bullets to the chest in Afghanistan partly because survival had been an issue for him since growing up on South Dakota's Pine Ridge Reservation. As a kid, FBI agents banged on his single mom's door to ask for weapons. Even then, he was a survivor.
