The College of Journalism and Mass Communications, in partnership with the Knight Digital Media Center at the University of Southern California Annenberg School for Communications & Journalism, is hosting a workshop for Nebraska news executives and journalism educators April 14-15.
"Get Ready to go Mobile!" will explore how to put mobile strategy front of mind, including how to build mobile strategies for community news organizations on tight budgets.
Participants will learn that mobile—from cheap "candybar" cell phones up to iPads—is an increasingly important media and communication channel spanning all income levels and geographic regions.
The workshop will be led by Vikki Porter, director of the Knight Digital Media Center at USC; Staci Baird, journalism instructor at San Francisco State University; Kim Duschinski, president of Mobile Marketing Profits; Amy Gahran, digital media consultant and senior editor of OaklandLocal.com; and Will Sullivan, interactive director of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Vikki Porter is director of the Knight Digital Media Center and supervises professional development programs for new media journalists at USC Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism in Los Angeles. She was the founding director of the Western Knight Center for Specialized Journalism at the USC Annenberg School. During her 30-year journalism career, Vikki worked in five Western states, started a newspaper, served as top editor for three community newspapers, and shared a 1986 Pulitzer Prize Gold Medal as part of a five-person team while city editor of The Denver Post.
Staci Baird is a media specialist with more than ten years of experience working with a variety of traditional and nontraditional media outlets. In 2010 Staci taught contemporary news media, the first mobile reporting class to be offered at SFSU. She currently teaches digital news gathering, online journalism, and serves as the tech adviser for student publications at San Francisco State University's journalism department.
Kim Dushinski is the President of Mobile Marketing Profits, a Denver-based marketing training firm that helps people start their own mobile marketing business and educates local businesses how to use mobile marketing to get more customers. She is the author of Success Secrets of Social Media Marketing Superstars. Kim was named one of the Mobile Women to Watch 2010 by MobileMarketer.com.
Amy Gahran is a journalist, media consultant, and entrepreneur based in Oakland, CA. She is the cofounder of Oakland Local, a local news and community hub site serving Oakland, Calif. Amy also blogs about mobile technology for CNN.com. And she covers digital news for journalists and newsroom leadership topics for the Knight Digital Media Center at the University of Southern California. At Oakland Local, Amy's leading a mobile initiative focused on bringing Oakland Local to cell phones—which includes serving the inexpensive, simpler "feature phones" which her research shows that 70% of Oakland residents primarily rely upon. This project was funded by a grant from the Renaissance Journalism Center.
Will Sullivan has won more than a dozen awards for his innovative interactive work from organizations, including the Online News Association, Editor & Publisher EPpy Awards, Pictures of the Year International, and Society for News Design and National Press Photographer Association. Currently he is on a Reynolds Journalism Institute fellowship focusing on mobile tools. Sullivan is co-founder and co-director of the National Press Photographer Association Multimedia Immersion workshop, which has taught almost 200 professional photographers how to thrive in the multimedia environment. He's also taught and led workshops around the country for organizations including South by Southwest Interactive, The Poynter Institute, Associated Press Managing Editors, and guest-taught at more than a dozen universities and consulted for several major journalism corporations.
