Jim Brady, an entrepreneur and online news expert, will visit the J school Nov. 19. Brady has more than 15 years of experience working with renowned online news outlets including America Online, the washingtonpost.com and TBD.com.
Most recently, Brady oversaw the launch of TBD.com, a site offering news coverage of the Washington, D.C., area. TBD is both a TV station and website that produces original journalism and also delivers news and entertainment by aggregating dozens of local blogs, websites, social media and other media. The site was launched by Allbritton Communications, owner of Politico, and has attracted attention for its new model of hyperlocal coverage.
Brady joined washingtonpost.com in 1995 as sports editor and assistant managing editor for news, assisting with the site's launch in 1996. He was instrumental in creating new multimedia storytelling opportunities, developing new tools for database journalism and finding new ways to connect readers and journalists. While Brady was at washingtonpost.com, the site won numerous awards including a national Emmy, a Peabody Award and an Editor & Publisher award for Best Overall Newspaper-Affiliated Website.
Brady left washingtonpost.com for America Online in 1999 where he served in various management roles including vice president of production and operations. He returned to washingtonpost.com in 2004 as executive editor.
Brady earned his bachelor's degree in journalism from The American University in 1989 and began his journalism career as a sportswriter for The Washington Post.
While visiting the J school, Brady will speak to students in several classes, including Mass Media Law, New Media and Journalism 101, He also will do an interview with Campus Voices.
