Tuck takes over reigns of Academic Senate

As a photographer and photojournalism teacher, George Tuck is accustomed to seeing both the big picture and the way it is formed by all the little details.

He sees both when he looks forward to his year as president of the UNL Academic Senate. Tuck, a professor in the news/editorial department of the UNL College of Journalism, sys much of the senate’s work coming months will focus on the university’s budget and what cutbacks will mean to the faculty and students.

The big picture is the role the university plays in the state. “The state has tremendous resources in the university,” Tuck said, “and it is being jeopardized by the budget right now.”

His involvement with the Academic Senate “keeps the College of Journalism presence out there,” Tuck said, protecting the college and its interests in the broader setting of the UNL campus. “The more you’re involved, the more you can effect change,” he added.

The 108 members of the Academic Senate represent all colleges and departments o the UNL campus. The body also includes representation from the administrative offices Subcommittees deal with everything from the university’s budget to its role and mission and curriculum to professional conduct, human rights, faculty salaries and benefits.
