CoJMC hosts Nebraska High School Press Association summer workshop

Advisers and students of scholastic publications are going to summer camp on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus.

Andersen Hall, the home of the College of Journalism and Mass Communications, will be the scene of two workshops — a seminar for advisers will be held Sunday, July 22; and an intensive four-day workshop for high school students is scheduled for July 23-26.

At the annual summer camp workshop advisers from the Nebraska High School Press Association and CoJMC faculty will teach sessions on convergence, journalistic writing, newspaper and yearbook production, photography and editorial leadership. Students attend the four-day intensive classes in a subject of their choosing.

NHSPA executive director Mary Kay Quinlan says she hopes the summer camp sparks an interest in junior and senior high school students who will go on to study journalism.

Quinlan serves as a liaison between the NHSPA and the Nebraska School Activities Association. The NSAA co-sponsors a fall journalism convention and spring championship contest. Quinlan has taught reporting and writing classes at UNL since 1999.

The UNL College of Journalism and Mass Communications hosts the summer camp to help serve the journalistic needs of high school students and advisers.
