Forming a Steering Team

Forming a Steering Team

A representative steering team is key to the success of the ECAP process.  Identifying in your community who are interested in serving on the steering team to move the process forward is essential.  Things to consider in identifying your steering team:
  • Identify individuals that are good at bringing others to the table and from a wide-variety of organizations.  Representatives may include:
    • Schools/Higher Education
    • City county/tribal government
    • Community organizations
    • Law enforcement
    • Health & medical professions
    • Social services
    • Youth
    • Faith Based
  • Identify individuals that are willing to provide feedback and are vested in helping to make sure the process goes well.
  • At a minimum, identify 4-6 individuals for a steering team. The number of individuals on
the steering team will be dependent upon the size of the community.
  • Include champions in the mix.

Champions

The champion(s) are those encouraging the process to begin. For the community process to work, more individuals need to be involved than a champion(s) or there will be difficulty in getting buy-in.

Clearly identify and communicate the expectations for the steering team.
  • Support and attend the four community conversations.
  • Market and promote the discovery tool and community conversations.
  • Encourage participation – an inclusive open process to the public and everyone encouraged to participate.
  • Identify community meeting dates and times that work best for the community at large.
  • Provide feedback to facilitators during the ECAP process.
  • Determine what is needed for the effort to be successful in this community.

Note

Individuals may or may not help in implementing the outcomes that are identified through the process.
