Bicycles and Pedestrians

Transportation research is concerned with much more than motor vehicles and vehicle operators. Finding ways to safely and comfortably integrate pedestrians and bicyclists into transportation systems is also essential. Research examines best practices in designing elements of infrastructure and intersections, and also looks for ways to increase awareness of pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers that may encounter them. NTC researchers have, for example, worked to improve pedestrian and bicyclist safety at railroad crossings and researched best practices in landscape treatments for pedestrians and bicyclists at roundabouts.
