Apparel Design Option

The textile and apparel design option is commonly referred to as fashion design. The program relates the physical properties of textiles to the human need for functional and fashionable clothing and home accessories. Design coursework is complemented by courses in product development, merchandising, textile science and the historical, cultural and psychological aspects of textiles and dress.

Explore culture, design and fashion in Germany or gain insights into the apparel industry and fashion design in Korea during faculty-led global experiences.

TMFD 112: Product Development I: Garment Assembly

Technical experience in stitch applications, garment construction and finishes and fundamental fit. Experiences in diverse disciplines within the department and their relation to global industries.

TMFD 145: Color Studio: Theory and Practice

Explore color concepts in two- and three-dimensional formats. Emphasis on applications to visual merchandising, product development and fashion design.

TMFD 406: Textile Testing and Evaluation

Physical and chemical analysis of textiles using standard testing procedures. The calculation, interpretation and evaluation of test results.

TMFD 410: Body, Dress and Identity

Theories and research findings about the social, cultural and psychological aspects of clothing and appearance in relation to the self and others.

TMFD 416: Apparel Design for Industry

Designing apparel, computer-aided design, pattern making and line development for specific markets.

TMFD 425: Advanced Design for Printed Textiles

Digital and other media for printed textiles. Design development, professional practices and expressive and communicative concepts.
