Communications Option

The textiles, merchandising and fashion design/communications option combines a background in textiles and fashion with advertising or another area of media communications to prepare you for a career in textiles and fashion communications. As a student in this program, you will work closely with faculty in both Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design and the College of Journalism and Mass Communications.

Hands-On Experience

Apply what you've learned and gain practical experience through an internship. Students have completed internships with organizations such as F2NYC Accessories in New York City, Home Shopping Network in St. Petersburg, Florida and Sweat Ethic in Corona, California.

Global Experiences

Explore culture, design and fashion in Germany or gain insights into the apparel industry and fashion design in Korea during faculty-led global experiences.

Notable Courses

TMFD 112: Product Development I: Garment Assembly

Technical experience in stitch applications, garment construction and finishes and fundamental fit. Experiences in diverse disciplines within the department and their relation to global industries.

TMFD 145: Color Studio: Theory and Practice

Explore color concepts in two- and three-dimensional formats. Emphasis on applications to visual merchandising, product development, and fashion design.

TMFD 406: Textile Testing and Evaluation

Physical and chemical analysis of textiles using standard testing procedures. The calculation, interpretation and evaluation of test results.

TMFD 410: Body, Dress and Identity

Theories and research findings about the social, cultural, and psychological aspects of clothing and appearance in relation to the self and others.

ADPR 221: Strategic Writing for Advertising and Public Relations

Advertising and public relations writing styles and techniques to develop effective, goal-oriented communications designed for diverse audiences, tactics and media.

JOMC 130: Introduction to Design Thinking

Live events, online materials and activities in design thinking, storytelling, and how technology works to challenge students to think creatively, strategically and intelligently when producing content.
