Janel Simons is the Newspaper Associate in the Center for Digital Research in the Humanities (CDRH). Through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the CDRH will provide 100,000 additional pages of historic Nebraska newspapers to the Chronicling America website. Simons is responsible for providing metadata for the selected newspapers, ensuring quality control of the images, and validating all newspaper content being delivered to the Library of Congress. She works closely with partners at the Nebraska State Historical Society, the College of Journalism and Mass Communications, and the board, as well as the external vendor for the project.

As a doctoral candidate at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Simons specializes in nineteenth-century American literature and culture, with a focus on the antebellum period. Simons's doctoral research approaches literatures of the U.S. War with Mexico from an interdisciplinary perspective, examining the ways in which this war shaped the nineteenth-century American cultural and literary imagination.
