E.coli

Escherichia coli O157:H7. is one of hundreds of strains of the bacterium Escherichia coli. Although most strains are harmless and live in the intestines of healthy humans and animals, this strain produces a powerful toxin and can cause severe illness. E. coli O157:H7 is accurate and acceptable when referring to this specific strain.

East Union

Actual name is Nebraska East Union.

The division of the Nebraska Union located on East Campus. East Union is acceptable on second reference. NOT student union or East Campus Union.

Eastern Nebraska Research and Extension Center

Name of the university's research center near Mead, formerly known as the Agricultural Research and Development Center. "ENREC" or "the center" is preferred on second reference.

Education and Human Sciences, College of

Name for one of the university's colleges, a merger of the former Teachers College and College of Human Resources and Family Sciences.

Eisentrager—Howard Gallery of the Department of Art and Art History

Gallery space for art students located inside Richards Hall. Official name uses a “dot” between Eisentrager and Howard. Can use a dash when this works better typographically.

Elephant Hall

Colloquial name given to Morrill Hall and the Nebraska State Museum because of the mammoth bones on display. Use “Morrill Hall” when referring to the building. One of the halls inside the building is called Elephant Hall.

emerita, emeritus, emeriti

Emeritus professors are those who retain their rank or title after retirement. Emerita is for women; emeritus is for men; emeriti is plural. Not all retired faculty retain their rank or earn the emerita title. Place this title after the formal title.

Engineering, College of

Official name of one of the university’s colleges. No longer referred to as Engineering and Technology

Esther L. Kauffman Academic Residential Center

Official name of the residence/learning hall on campus housing the Jeffrey S. Raikes School of Computer Science and Management. Often shortened to Kauffman Center, which is an acceptable on second reference.

Extension

Official name is University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension. Nebraska Extension is also acceptable on first reference.

On second reference, extension or Nebraska Extension is acceptable. Not NU extension or Cooperative Extension. A division of the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources, never use Extension Service or Extension Division.

extension educator

The title of the faculty or staff who work for Nebraska Extension across the state. Never use county agent.
