April 10, 2015

On this week's Market Journal Bryce Anderson, DTN senior ag meteorologist, gives an update on moisture conditions across Nebraska and forecasts spring planting weather for the state. Tamra Jackson-Ziems, Nebraska Extension plant pathologist, describes ideal planting conditions for corn and discusses how early season cool wet conditions can contribute to early season corn seedling diseases. Seed treatments can help but may not overcome stressed conditions. Waiting for optimal planting conditions can help avoid some of these early season issues, she said.

Also on the April 10 Market Journal:

  • Market Analysis — Todd Hultman, DTN grain analyst, examines the pace of soybean demand during the first half of the crop year. Hultman also looks at overall world grain production in 2015 and the strength of the dollar's impact on exports.
  • Precision Ag — Nathan Mueller, Nebraska Extension cropping systems educator, discusses the use of precision ag tools to make management decisions on the farm. See the Precision Agriculture section of  CropWatch for more information and resources.
  • Weather Forecast — Al Dutcher, UNL Extension state climatologist, gives his forecast for the coming week.

Next Week

Derrell Peel, Oklahoma State Extension livestock marketing specialist, will analyze cattle markets. Luke Beckman, Central Valley Ag commodity risk manager, will look at corn and soybean markets. Aaron Berger, Nebraska Extension educator, will talk about developing a drought plan for pastures and ranges.
